According to a report of the European Commission, the quality of water along the beaches of the Bulgarian coast is one of the best in the European Union.
The report was based on samples, taken from waters where swimming was allowed in 2009. Only one of the beaches in Bulgaria has not met the European standards in 2009.
In Bulgaria have been tested 93 beaches, of which 92 (or 98.9%) fully meet the statutory criteria for the cleanliness of bathing waters and beaches in the EU. The report states an increase of clean beaches with 5.6 % in comparison to the indicators from 2008.
France, Malta, Greece and Cyprus have the cleanest waters in the EU. There exist more stringent criteria for purity and 90% of the water basins of these countries meet them. This includes the waters of Portugal and Bulgaria, which is determined by the European Commission as a major achievement compared to the previous year.
The waters on the beaches in Europe are tested for contaminants of chemical, physical and bacteriological nature. A law of the European Commission sets the minimum standards which all beaches and pools for bathing must meet. Upon a decision of the individual countries they can increase the purity criteria.
All visitors who will set off this year for the beaches of Bulgaria and Europe must be fully confident in the quality of the water and beaches.
